How to Listen to Classical Music

Article · 15 Aug, 2025

In this article, I’d like to share some of my personal reflections on listening to classical music, as well as the method I use myself. None of what I share is based on scientific evidence, so please take it as personal insight only.

Classical music is a process of compression and decompression

Before discussing how to listen to classical music, I’d like to share my own perspective on the experience itself.

I think that both the performance and appreciation of classical music are, at their core, a process of compression and decompression. On the performance side, the conductor, soloists, and orchestra compress the composer’s personality, the conductor’s interpretation, the orchestra’s culture, and the technical demands of the piece into sound, delivering it to the audience.

The audience, in turn, uses their own personality, life experience, and understanding of the composer, conductor, and orchestra to decompress that sound—extracting the information and emotion embedded within the music. To me, this is the essence of listening to classical music.

How to Listen to Classical Music: Listen Repeatedly

As listeners, before we can "decompress" the music, we first need to download it into our brains. This so-called "download" means listening repeatedly — because unlike computers, we can't just store it on a hard drive after a single download. So we have to listen over and over again.

Whenever I come across a new piece, I usually pick one recording and listen to it repeatedly. The goal of this isn't to analyze technical aspects, but simply to become familiar with the melodies of the piece as a whole.

Once the melodies start to feel familiar, we naturally begin to notice more details—like tone color, harmonies, or, on a macro level, the personalities behind the music.

It’s a bit like watching a movie for the hundredth time. When you already know the plot inside out and can recite the lines by heart, you start to notice other things—like whether the acting feels genuine, or what kind of personality the director has.

I hope this method helps you in your own journey of listening to classical music.
